New Polling Suggests Trump ‘Strong As Ever’ Ahead of ’24 Despite Legal Woes

Despite the fact that former President Donald Trump continues to face a series of legal challenges and Justice Department investigations, he appears not to be suffering too much, politically speaking, according to new polling. Trump appears as “strong as ever” ahead of the 2024 presidential election cycle, and what’s more, he is polling better than President Joe Biden.

“John and Jim McLaughlin, who runs McLaughlin & Associates, recently released their poll” last week “that shows the former president ahead of DeSantis 48%-23%, just as popular as he was on Election Day last month, and leading Biden 48%-45%,” Paul Bedard of the “Washington Secrets” column noted.

“Here at Secrets, we write a lot about polls and have highlighted many about the DeSantis surge, especially after his blockbuster reelection last month. While it’s still over a year before the first caucus or primary, they all give a suggestion for how the candidates are doing among voters but shouldn’t be taken as the last word,” Bedard continued.

That said, John McLaughlin noted that this latest survey is different because the sample they use is tougher. Specifically, the pollsters attempted to limit the sample to Americans most likely to vote rather than a bigger sample that would include some people who have never voted at all.

He added that the two pollsters also attempt to stay away from anti-Trump bias they say is present in most other polling. And, they said, the latest survey uses the Democrat-to-Republican percentage of the most recent elections. That can create differences in the results, he noted.

“First you have to look at the quality of the poll and the source. Most published polls are from the liberal, anti-Trump media, and they do backflips to create biased surveys to suppress Trump voters and donors. Many of the biased media polls are diluted with nonvoters and have samples of adults and do not reflect actual voters as likely voter polls do. They also bias the sample by asking anti-Trump questions,” John McLaughlin said.

Most polls have tended to undercount support for Trump, as noted in 2016 and again in 2020 while promoting Democratic opponents, Bedard noted. “Do they think that the voters have forgotten the ‘Hillary Lock’ of 2016 and the ‘Biden Blue Wave’ of 2020?” the pollsters asked in a blog post.

“For us, it’s deja vu all over again, except we may have learned from 2016 and 2020,” they said.

In the blog, also posted on Newsmax, they described some of their sample standards:

So once again we see the media using polls to discourage and suppress supporters and donors of President Trump. Why? Because it’s very clear that the Republican establishment, the Washington, D.C. establishment, and the media establishment do not want to see him elected president again.

Unlike these media polls that have diluted samples, or have Republicans as low as 25% of their sample (the 2020 election exit polls had Republicans at 36%), or ask leading anti-Trump questions before they ask the ballot, our poll was overall good news for President Trump.

John McLaughlin told Bedard: “The continued attacks on Trump by President Biden and liberals in Congress galvanize Trump’s conservative base. The bottom line — Trump is still the Republican to beat, and actual votes for delegates are over a year away.”

The pair noted that while support for Trump has nudged up a point since last month, it has fallen 4 points for DeSantis. No other Republican comes close; former Vice President Mike Pence, for instance, is third, but he only garnered 5 percent of the survey.

Trump is the only declared presidential contender in either party, as Biden has not officially announced yet.

“America’s comeback starts right now,” Trump said to a room full of supporters last month at his Mar-a-Lago estate. “Unlike other presidents, I kept my promises.”

“The world was at peace, America was prospering, and our country was on track for an amazing future— because I made big promises to the American People and, unlike other Presidents, I kept my promises,” he said. “Under our leadership, we were a great and glorious nation, something you haven’t heard for quite a long period of time. We were a strong nation, and importantly we were a free nation. Now, we are a nation in decline. We are a failing nation.”

Trump declared: “I am tonight again announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.”
